[Soekris] general questions

Another option, which is what I do, is just to run snmpd on the machine,
and use something like MRTG to snarf the data on 5 minute intervals or
something.  This takes almost no CPU time, since the snmp daemon just
exports the counters that you'd get with ifconfig.  I've been running
this solution on my own firewall (P133 machine) and had nary a problem.
The graphs themselves can be seen at
http://vancouver.lucidoc.com/cgi-bin/routers2.cgi when I move over to a
Soekris for a wifi project that I'm working on, I intend to keep this
solution going.  
The added bonus of this is, of course, that you do not need any 
writeable storage for the soekris at all, since the statistics are
sucked down by the remote host.
