There already is a device driver in FreeBSD for doing this:
echo 1 > /dev/soekris-errled
If you're not running FreeBSD, you can find the necessary info
in the src/sys/i386/i386/elan-mmcr.c source file in a FreeBSD
source tree near you. I can't remember the details of the top
of my head.
