Not to be picky, but the correct designation is DE9.
the first letter designates the connector series, the second designates the
size of the connector shell.  A = 15 pin (old apple monitors, ethernet AUI)
B = 25 (rs-232 serial), C = 37 , D = 50, E = 9. 

don't feel bad, very few people get it right, and most manufacturers get it
wrong..   see an Amphenol, or Cannon catalog for the original designations.
