have you tried netbooting and installing from a netbooted kernel?

it will then use the bios values from COMbios, so might work.

(and netbooting will at least let you play with the cf card in situ).

I suppose you could also try changing the mbr so that it dosn't have more
that 256 secs/cylinders, incase there is an 8 bit limitation of that field
in the bios.
