I have been looking for quite awhile for an LCD that might fit the front
or the back of the 4501. Unfortunately I have found nothing small
enough, even one-line displays. Maybe someone else will have better
luck. Alternatively, the area on top of the 4501, above the PCI card
area is large enough for even a big fat graphical LCD.

As for interfacing a parallel LCD, it appears the eight GPIO lines
available are not only non-contiguous bits but not in order
(PIO5,6,7,8,21,22,11,12). Perhaps you could use the first four bits for
data since they appear in order and just put the LCD in 4-bit mode. The
other lines are available for R/W, Data/Instruction, CLK, etc.

1 or 2 lines, 8 - 20 characters. Maybe mounting for 1 or 2 buttons. I
was envisioning the mounting to the right of the front panel LED's in
the space where a PCI card might occupy.
