I have successfully run console on serial on both desktop and the net4501.

Not quite sure I understand that one.  Looks to me like you mapped 
the first bios drive to /dev/hde?  To make it bootable maybe?

Yep, have that too.  Console works fine on both desktop and net4501.  
That's how I found out where it quits booting.

Well, I thought about that.  When I originally started trying to boot 
from the CF card on the net4501, lilo kept dying on me.  Using the linear 
option fixed that, so I am assuming that it is using the same geometry.  

The kernel loads and starts executing, then dies just before it should be 
mounting the root disk read only for disk checking.
